About Dennis Frayne
Music has shaped my life for as long as I can remember.
As a child, I discovered that music could inspire, challenge, comfort, and connect people in remarkable ways. As a teacher, I discovered something even more meaningful: music education has the power to change lives.
That conviction has guided my work ever since.
Today I serve as a music educator, author, publisher, educational leader, and founder of The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education, The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education, and The Dennis Frayne Ascent. While my work has taken many different forms over the years, every project has been driven by the same mission:
We're strengthening music education because music education strengthens people.
For more than three decades, I have had the privilege of teaching children, teenagers, adults, families, and fellow music teachers in private studios, schools, churches, classrooms, and community music programs. I have taught beginning students taking their very first lesson, advanced musicians preparing for auditions and performances, aspiring music educators, and experienced teachers seeking new ideas and renewed confidence. Along the way I have directed choirs, bands, orchestras, musical theater productions, and music schools, and have been continually reminded that every learner's journey is unique.
Those experiences gradually led me to develop what is now known as The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education: a connected philosophy that brings together musicianship, thoughtful pedagogy, healthy technique, creativity, meaningful learning, and genuine care for each individual student. It reflects thousands of lessons taught, countless conversations with students, parents, and teachers, years of study, and an enduring belief that every person can continue growing through music.
Alongside teaching, I have written curriculum, method books, educational articles, and teaching resources designed to make music learning more natural, connected, and joyful. The Presto! It's Piano Magic series and related publications grew from the same desire that has guided my teaching from the beginning: to help students become musical people and to help teachers teach with greater confidence, clarity, and joy.
My educational journey has been shaped by many remarkable teachers and mentors. I earned Associate of Arts degrees in Music and Theatre Arts before completing Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees at California State University, Long Beach. I later earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from California State University, Fresno, followed by a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. My doctoral research explored teacher inquiry, transformative learning, and the ways educational communities grow through thoughtful reflection, collaboration, and shared purpose.
Although I value scholarship, I have never believed that the best educational ideas emerge from research alone. They also emerge from listening carefully to students, partnering with families, collaborating with colleagues, asking better questions, and remaining a learner ourselves. My doctoral work affirmed something I had already experienced as a teacher: education is at its best when it is rooted in curiosity, relationships, reflection, and hope.
Today I continue to teach, write, develop curriculum, mentor educators, and advocate for music education. My hope is that every student can build a lifelong relationship with music, every teacher can enjoy a rewarding and sustainable career, and every community can experience the many ways music enriches human life.
