About Dennis Frayne
For as long as I can remember, music has been one of the great joys of my life.
Teaching music has given me the privilege of helping thousands of students discover that same joy while also allowing me to continue growing as a musician, teacher, learner, author, and educational leader.
Throughout my career, I have worked with students of many ages, backgrounds, interests, and abilities, and every lesson has reinforced a simple truth: music education is about much more than learning notes and rhythms. It is about helping people build lifelong relationships with music.
Over the years, I came to realize that while teaching methods may differ, the deepest principles of effective music education remain remarkably consistent. The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education grew from a lifelong effort to understand, organize, and share those principles with teachers, students, and families.
What began as daily teaching gradually expanded into directing music schools, mentoring teachers, developing curriculum, writing articles and books, presenting workshops, and pursuing advanced study in music education. Each new experience raised new questions, refined old assumptions, and deepened my understanding of how people learn music most effectively. The Dennis Frayne Approach did not emerge from a single moment or idea. It developed over decades of teaching, listening, studying, observing, experimenting, and continually asking how music education could become even more meaningful, connected, and joyful.
Today, my work centers around three closely connected initiatives. The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education provides the educational philosophy and framework that guides this work. The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education supports teachers through professional development, certification, mentorship, and community. The Dennis Frayne Ascent encourages and recognizes students through a lifelong journey of comprehensive musicianship and meaningful musical achievement. Together, these initiatives share a common purpose: strengthening music education so that more people can experience the lifelong benefits of making music.

My Educational Philosophy
I believe every person is capable of becoming more musical.
Music education should welcome learners of every age and ability while encouraging genuine excellence through thoughtful teaching, meaningful challenge, and joyful participation. Students learn best when instruction is connected, sequential, engaging, and centered on authentic music making. They deserve opportunities not only to perform, but also to sing, listen, create, improvise, conduct, compose, understand, and communicate through music.
I also believe that teachers deserve outstanding support. Great teaching grows from confidence, clarity, continual learning, and a strong professional community. When teachers flourish, they are better able to help students, families, and communities flourish through music.
These convictions continue to guide my writing, teaching, curriculum development, and work with educators throughout the profession.
Looking Ahead

I continue teaching because every student has something new to teach me.
I continue learning because music is too rich to ever be fully explored.
I continue writing because ideas become more valuable when they are shared.
And I continue working alongside teachers because I believe the future of music education will be shaped not by one person or one organization, but by a growing community of educators who care deeply about helping people become lifelong musicians.
