The Ascent Program
Inspiring Lifelong Musical Growth
The Dennis Frayne Ascent is the student honors and awards program of The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education.
Designed for learners of every age and ability, The Ascent recognizes meaningful musical growth through authentic Demonstrations of Learning that celebrate comprehensive musicianship. Rather than rewarding simple participation or focusing on a single examination, competition, or performance, The Ascent encourages students to continue growing throughout a lifetime of music-making.
It is built upon a simple belief: every student deserves to be challenged, encouraged, and recognized.
Open to all. Earned by each. Celebrated by everyone.
A Lifelong Journey
Learning music can be likened to climbing a mountain. Every step builds upon the one before it. Every new level brings fresh opportunities, broader understanding, and greater confidence. Some students progress quickly. Others take more time. Every journey is different, and every milestone represents genuine accomplishment.
The Ascent is intentionally designed to accompany students for years — and often decades — as they continue becoming thoughtful, creative, and well-rounded musicians.
Performance, But More Than Performance
The Ascent celebrates comprehensive musicianship.
Students demonstrate their learning through authentic musical experiences that may include performance, singing, listening, improvisation, composition, arranging, conducting, creativity, leadership, service, teaching, and many other aspects of musical understanding.
Each level encourages students to develop not only technical skill, but also musical imagination, communication, artistry, and a lifelong relationship with music.
Recognition That Motivates
Every completed level represents meaningful achievement.
Recognition within The Ascent is earned through Demonstrations of Learning that show what students can genuinely do with music. Each accomplishment celebrates perseverance, curiosity, discipline, creativity, and continued growth while encouraging students to keep ascending toward new goals.
The emphasis is not on competing against others. It is on becoming the best musician each student is capable of becoming.
A Program for Every Musician
The Ascent welcomes children, teenagers, adults, lifelong learners, and music teachers themselves.
Students progress at their own pace while exploring a rich and diverse musical repertoire that spans historical periods, cultures, traditions, and musical styles. Every participant begins at the first level and builds a unique musical journey through consistent learning, thoughtful instruction, and meaningful accomplishment.
Because every musician's journey is different, every musician's Ascent is unique.
Part of a Connected Vision
The Dennis Frayne Ascent is one of The Association's signature programs and works alongside The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education to create a connected framework for lifelong musical growth.
The Approach provides the educational philosophy that guides teaching and learning.
The Association supports teachers through community, coaching, professional development, and certification.
The Ascent provides students with meaningful goals, authentic demonstrations of learning, recognition, and lasting motivation.
Together, they help teachers teach with confidence while encouraging students to become capable, creative, and lifelong musicians.
Continue Your Ascent
The Dennis Frayne Ascent is designed to inspire students from their very first lesson through a lifetime of music-making.
Whether completing an early milestone or working toward the Summit after decades of musical growth, every accomplishment represents meaningful learning and every level invites students to continue climbing.
Because the joy of music is not found only at the summit.
It is found in every step of the journey.
