None of us ever reaches a point where there is nothing left to learn.
The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education exists to support that lifelong journey.
We are a professional community dedicated to strengthening music teachers through education, encouragement, collaboration, and shared purpose. Together, we seek to advance the art and practice of music teaching while helping more students build lifelong relationships with music.
Our Purpose

The Dennis Frayne Approach provides the educational philosophy that guides our work. The Association brings that philosophy to life through professional community, certification, continuing education, practical resources, and opportunities for collaboration. The Dennis Frayne Ascent extends those same principles to students through a lifelong framework for recognizing meaningful musical growth.
Together, these three initiatives share one purpose: strengthening music education because music education strengthens people.

Who may join The Association?
The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education welcomes music teachers, educators, and others whose work contributes meaningfully to music learning.
Members may teach in private studios, schools, colleges, universities, community programs, churches, ensembles, arts organizations, or other educational settings. They may work with any age group and may specialize in any instrument, voice, ensemble, musical tradition, or area of music education.
Do I need to teach a particular instrument or subject?
No. The Association is not limited to piano teachers or to any single area of music instruction. Instrumental teachers, vocal teachers, ensemble directors, general music educators, composers, conductors, music technology teachers, college faculty, community educators, and many others can participate. The diversity of members’ experiences strengthens the entire community.
Do I need to follow The Dennis Frayne Approach in order to join?
Members should be interested in The Association’s mission and open to learning about the principles of The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education, but they do not need to arrive with prior training or agree with every idea before participating. The Association encourages thoughtful study, discussion, reflection, and professional inquiry. Teachers bring their own experiences and expertise while exploring ideas that may strengthen their work.
Member teachers can become certified in levels and other components of The Dennis Frayne Approach.

Is The Association only for experienced teachers?
No. The Association welcomes teachers at every stage of their careers.
New teachers may find guidance, community, and encouragement as they begin. Experienced teachers may deepen their practice, explore new areas, mentor others, and continue growing. Retired teachers may remain connected to the profession and share valuable wisdom accumulated over many years.
Every stage of a teaching career offers both opportunities to learn and opportunities to contribute.
Is The Association only for teachers in the United States?
Yes. The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education is initially designed to serve music teachers in the United States. Its philosophy recognizes that music and music education are international, and members learn from traditions, ideas, repertoire, and educators from throughout the world. When strategic, foundational, architectural, or cultural decisions need to be made, The Association makes what it feels is the best decision for teachers, students, and society living, working, and learning in the United States of America.
Additional forms of international participation may be developed as The Association grows.
What do members receive?

Specific membership benefits may expand and evolve over time, but the central purpose remains consistent: to help music teachers find connection, encouragement, practical assistance, and meaningful opportunities for continued growth.
Is The Association a professional development organization?
Professional development is an important part of The Association, but the community is broader than a collection of courses or workshops.
The Association supports the whole teacher. This includes teaching practice, musicianship, professional relationships, leadership, creativity, career development, personal sustainability, and lifelong learning.
Members are not simply completing professional development. They are building professional lives.
How do members participate?
Members may participate by reading and using Association resources, joining professional conversations, asking questions, sharing ideas, attending learning opportunities, supporting colleagues, and contributing their own knowledge and experience.
Participation can take different forms during different seasons of life. Some members may be highly active, while others may engage more quietly or periodically. Both are welcome.
Can members ask for help with specific teaching challenges?
Yes. Practical support is one of the central purposes of The Association.
Members are encouraged to bring questions involving individual students, curriculum, sequencing, repertoire, communication, performances, classroom or studio challenges, professional decisions, and other aspects of music teaching.
The goal is not to impose a single answer, but to help teachers think clearly, consider possibilities, and make informed decisions within their own settings.
Does The Association provide certification?
Yes. The Association offers certification opportunities connected with The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education.
Certification provides a structured pathway for teachers who wish to study The Approach in greater depth, strengthen their teaching and musicianship, complete meaningful assignments and demonstrations, and receive formal recognition for their learning.
Association membership and certification are related, but they are not the same. Teachers may belong to The Association without immediately entering a certification program.
Must teachers be certified to participate in The Ascent?
Not necessarily. Teachers who offer The Dennis Frayne Ascent must meet the participation and preparation requirements established by The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education. This includes Association Membership and participation in the required certification coursework.
The Ascent is built upon the educational principles of The Dennis Frayne Approach. These preparation requirements help ensure that students across the country experience the program with consistency, integrity, and a shared understanding of its philosophy, level structure, Demonstrations of Learning, submission procedures, and expectations for comprehensive musicianship.
Specific participation requirements are described in The Association and Ascent documentation.
Can teachers participate in The Ascent as students?
Yes. Teachers are warmly encouraged to participate in The Ascent as students in their own right.
Teachers begin at Trailhead Level 1 and progress through every level in sequence, just as all other participants do. Their own participation allows them to deepen their comprehensive musicianship, experience The Ascent from the learner’s perspective, and model lifelong growth for the students they teach.
A teacher participating as an Ascent student works under the guidance of another participating teacher who is also a member of The Association.
Is The Association competitive?
No. The Association is built upon collaboration rather than competition.
Members may work in similar communities, teach similar instruments, or operate similar programs, but The Association encourages educators to share ideas, celebrate one another’s accomplishments, and strengthen the profession together.
The success of one teacher does not diminish another. Stronger teachers create stronger opportunities for students and healthier musical communities.
Will The Association tell me exactly how I must teach?
No. The Association offers principles, resources, examples, and support, but teachers remain responsible for making thoughtful professional decisions for their own students and settings.
The Dennis Frayne Approach values clarity and coherence, but it also recognizes that students, teachers, communities, and educational environments are different. The goal is not uniformity. The goal is more confident, intentional, and effective teaching.
What makes The Association different from a social media group?
Social media groups can be useful places to exchange quick ideas, but The Association is intended to become a sustained professional community built around shared purpose, thoughtful resources, continuing relationships, and meaningful professional growth.
The emphasis is not simply on gathering information. It is on developing confidence, clarity, community, musicianship, leadership, and long-term professional fulfillment.
What if I am already confident and successful in my teaching?
The Association is not based on the assumption that music teachers are deficient or need to be rescued.
Experienced, confident, and successful educators are valuable members of the community. They can continue learning, discover new perspectives, explore additional areas of musicianship or leadership, contribute their expertise, and encourage others.
Professional growth is not evidence that a teacher has failed. It is part of a healthy and rewarding career.
How does The Association support lifelong careers?
