Who may join The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education?

The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education welcomes music teachers throughout the United States who are committed to continual growth and to helping students build lifelong relationships with music. Whether you are just beginning your teaching career or have decades of experience, you'll find opportunities to learn, grow, contribute, and become part of a supportive professional community.

Teacher Members come from a wide variety of educational settings, including independent studios, community music schools, public and private schools, colleges and universities, churches, ensembles, arts organizations, and other music education programs. They teach students of every age and may specialize in piano, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, guitar, ukulele, composition, conducting, classroom music, early childhood music, or many other areas of music education.

What unites our members is not a particular teaching setting or musical specialty, but a shared commitment to thoughtful teaching, lifelong learning, stronger musicianship, and the continued strengthening of music education.

Do I need to teach a particular instrument or subject?

No. The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education welcomes teachers from every area of music education. Whether you teach piano, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, guitar, ukulele, composition, conducting, classroom music, early childhood music, music technology, music history, music theory, or another musical discipline, you'll find ideas, resources, and professional community designed to support your growth as an educator.

The Dennis Frayne Approach is built upon principles of teaching and learning that extend across all areas of music education. While some curriculum resources, such as Presto! It's Piano Magic, are designed specifically for piano instruction, the educational philosophy, Core Tenets, and commitment to developing complete musicians apply to every instrument, ensemble, and musical setting.

We also believe that every musical discipline has something unique to teach us. As teachers continue growing in their own musicianship and learning from one another's experiences, the entire Association becomes stronger, enriching both our teaching and the musical lives of the students we serve.

Do I need to follow The Dennis Frayne Approach to Music Education in order to join?

You do not need prior training in the Dennis Frayne Approach or previous experience with its curriculum in order to become a Teacher Member. Many members join because they are looking for greater confidence, clearer teaching, stronger musicianship, meaningful professional community, and new ideas that can strengthen their work.

We simply ask that members share the Association's mission and values and come with a genuine interest in learning about the Dennis Frayne Approach with an open mind. The Association encourages thoughtful study, professional discussion, reflection, and continual growth. Teachers bring their own experiences, insights, and expertise while exploring ideas that may enrich and strengthen their teaching.

As members continue their professional journey, they may choose to pursue certification in the Dennis Frayne Approach, participate in courses, coaching, and other professional development opportunities, and, if eligible, offer The Dennis Frayne Ascent to their students. Membership is designed to support teachers wherever they are in their careers while providing a clear pathway for continued learning and professional growth.

Individuals who wish to support the mission of the Association without becoming Teacher Members are also invited to explore our Association Sponsor Membership.

Is the Association only for experienced teachers?

No. The Association welcomes teachers at every stage of their careers. New teachers may find guidance, community, and encouragement as they begin. Experienced teachers may deepen their practice, explore new areas, mentor others, and continue growing. Retired teachers may remain connected to the profession and share valuable wisdom accumulated over many years.

Every stage of a teaching career offers both opportunities to learn and opportunities to contribute.

Is the Association only for teachers in the United States?

Yes. Teacher Membership in The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education is available to music teachers who live and teach in the United States. The Association has been intentionally designed to serve the needs of American music teachers, taking into account the educational systems, professional organizations, teaching environments, and cultural context unique to the United States.

At the same time, we recognize that music is a global art, and we celebrate the rich traditions, cultures, repertoire, and educational ideas that have shaped music throughout the world. The Dennis Frayne Approach encourages teachers and students to learn from a broad spectrum of musical traditions while preparing students to become thoughtful, well-rounded musicians and citizens.

Although Teacher Membership is limited to music teachers in the United States, participating teachers may teach students who live anywhere in the world. For example, a Teacher Member may offer The Dennis Frayne Ascent to eligible students regardless of where those students live, with certificates and other recognition awards mailed to the participating teacher for presentation or forwarding to the student.

What do members receive?

Teacher Members receive access to a growing collection of professional resources designed to support both excellent teaching and long-term professional growth. Depending on membership level, these may include publications, educational resources, coaching, certification opportunities, professional community, The Dennis Frayne Ascent, member benefits through Presto! It's Music Magic Publishing, and many other opportunities to learn, contribute, and continue growing throughout a career in music education.

As the Association continues to grow, so will the opportunities available to members. Is the Association a professional development organization?

How do members participate?

There are many ways to participate in The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education. Members read and discuss publications, join professional conversations, participate in coaching, ask questions, share ideas, attend learning opportunities, encourage fellow teachers, and contribute their own experiences and expertise to the community.

Participation naturally changes throughout a teacher's career and the different seasons of life. Some members participate frequently, while others engage more quietly as time allows. Whether you contribute every week or simply stay connected while continuing to learn and grow, you remain an important part of the Association.

Can members ask for help with specific teaching challenges?

Absolutely. One of the defining purposes of the Association is to provide thoughtful, practical support for real teaching situations. Members are encouraged to bring questions about individual students, lesson planning, sequencing, repertoire, musicianship, motivation, performances, classroom or studio management, communication with families, professional decisions, and many other aspects of music teaching.

Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, the Dennis Frayne Approach encourages thoughtful conversation, careful reflection, and practical guidance that helps teachers make wise decisions within their own teaching settings. Some of the most valuable learning in the Association begins with a single question from a fellow teacher.

Does the Association provide certification?

Yes. Certification is one of the ways the Dennis Frayne Association helps teachers continue growing throughout their careers. It is a comprehensive program of professional study that connects educational philosophy directly to everyday teaching while strengthening musicianship, teaching practice, leadership, and professional confidence. Teachers explore the Dennis Frayne Approach through guided study, practical assignments, demonstrations, reflection, and direct application with their own students. Along the way, they receive encouragement, feedback, and support from a community committed to thoughtful teaching and lifelong learning.

Teacher Membership and certification are closely connected, but they are not the same. Membership provides your professional home and ongoing community, while certification offers a structured pathway for deeper study and continued professional growth. Teachers are welcome to join the Association first and pursue certification whenever the time is right for their personal and professional goals.

Must teachers be certified to participate in The Ascent?

Not necessarily. The Dennis Frayne Ascent is offered through eligible Teacher Members of The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education who meet the participation and preparation requirements established by the Association. This includes active Teacher Membership and participation in the required certification coursework.

Teachers do not need to complete every level of certification before introducing the Ascent to their students. As they continue progressing through the required certification pathway, they are also developing the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to guide students confidently through the program.

Because The Dennis Frayne Ascent is built upon the educational philosophy and core tenets of the Dennis Frayne Approach, these preparation requirements help ensure that students experience the program with consistency, integrity, and a shared understanding of its Demonstrations of Learning, level structure, educational purpose, and expectations for comprehensive musicianship.

Can teachers participate in The Ascent as students?

Yes. Teachers are warmly encouraged to participate in The Ascent as students in their own right. Teachers begin at Trailhead Level 1 and progress through every level in sequence, just as all other participants do. Their own participation allows them to deepen their comprehensive musicianship, experience The Ascent from the learner’s perspective, and model lifelong growth for the students they teach.

A teacher participating as an Ascent student works under the guidance of another participating teacher who is also a member of the Association.

Is The Association competitive?

No. The Association is built upon collaboration rather than competition. Members may work in similar communities, teach similar instruments, or operate similar programs, but The Association encourages educators to share ideas, celebrate one another’s accomplishments, and strengthen the profession together.

The success of one teacher does not diminish another. Stronger teachers create stronger opportunities for students and healthier musical communities.

Will the Association tell me exactly how I must teach?

No. The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education provides educational principles, practical resources, thoughtful guidance, and ongoing support, but it also respects the professional judgment of music teachers. Every student, teacher, lesson, studio, classroom, and community is unique, and thoughtful teaching always requires wisdom, flexibility, and discernment.

The Dennis Frayne Approach offers a connected educational philosophy and practical framework rather than a rigid set of rules. As teachers grow in understanding, musicianship, and experience, they become increasingly confident in making sound instructional decisions that reflect both the core principles of the Approach and the individual needs of their students.

Our goal is not to create teachers who all teach in exactly the same way. Our goal is to help teachers think clearly, teach thoughtfully, continue growing professionally, and develop the confidence to make wise decisions that help every student build a lifelong relationship with music.

What makes The Association different from a social media group?

Social media groups can be valuable places to ask questions, exchange ideas, and connect with other music teachers. The Dennis Frayne Association for Music Education is designed to offer something deeper: a connected professional community built around shared educational principles, meaningful relationships, thoughtful discussion, and lifelong professional growth.

Rather than relying on scattered conversations or isolated advice, members have access to an organized body of educational philosophy, publications, coaching, certification, practical teaching resources, and an ongoing community committed to helping one another grow.
