The Dennis Frayne Ascent is organized into eight major tiers, representing a connected journey of lifelong musical growth.
Rather than viewing music education as a series of disconnected accomplishments, the Ascent invites students to continue developing as musicians through carefully sequenced stages of increasing confidence, understanding, artistry, creativity, and leadership. Each tier represents an important milestone along the journey. Together they form a pathway that encourages students to continue growing for years, and often for a lifetime.
Every musical journey begins with a single step. In The Dennis Frayne Ascent, every music student enters at the very beginning: the first level of the first tier: Trailhead. Here, students begin developing confidence, curiosity, healthy musical habits, careful listening, and an enjoyment of making music. This is where the journey begins. For everyone.
🌱 Trailhead
Levels 1–7
The Trailhead marks the beginning of The Dennis Frayne Ascent and lays the foundation for a lifetime of musical growth. Across seven progressive levels, students develop confidence through meaningful performances, beautiful folk songs and traditional repertoire, singing, piano, comprehensive musicianship, and creative exploration. Each level builds naturally on the one before it, helping students become not only better performers, but more complete musicians.
Along the way, students expand their musical vocabulary through scales, solfege, rhythm, ear training, conducting, improvisation, arranging, composition, and movement, while presenting increasingly polished recital performances. Every level is dedicated to an influential music educator whose work has shaped music teaching for generations, connecting students with a rich tradition of educational excellence as they begin their own lifelong musical journey.
⛰️ Slopes
Levels 8–14
With a strong foundation established, students continue climbing. The Slopes encourage growing independence while expanding musical understanding through increasingly connected experiences. Confidence grows alongside musicianship as students begin taking greater ownership of their learning. Every step builds upon the last.
The Slopes build upon the strong foundation established at the Trailhead, guiding students toward greater musical independence, artistry, and confidence. Across seven progressively challenging levels, students explore an expanding repertoire of classical masterworks alongside folk and traditional music while continuing to strengthen performance, singing, piano, comprehensive musicianship, and creative expression. Each level deepens both technical skill and musical understanding, encouraging students to think, listen, and perform with increasing maturity.
As students ascend the Slopes, they develop greater fluency in major and minor keys, harmony, conducting, ear training, solfege, improvisation, arranging, movement, and performance, while presenting longer and more polished recitals. Along the way, they encounter the music and educational legacy of influential composers and teachers, including Louis Streabbog, Albert Ellmenreich, Friedrich Burgmüller, Stephen Heller, Robert Schumann, and the notebooks of Anna Magdalena Bach and Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart. The Slopes represent an exciting transition from learning the fundamentals to becoming a thoughtful, creative, and increasingly complete musician.
🌲 Forest
Levels 15–21
The journey becomes broader and richer. Students continue exploring new musical experiences while strengthening existing skills and developing greater artistic understanding. Learning becomes increasingly interconnected as musicianship continues to mature. Growth comes through exploration as well as mastery.
The Forest marks an exciting stage of artistic growth, where students move beyond technical proficiency to become more versatile, creative, and expressive musicians. Across seven levels, students explore a rich and varied repertoire while studying influential composers from many musical traditions, performing on piano, singing, and developing proficiency on a required second instrument. Musical understanding expands through advanced musicianship, harmony, conducting, creative projects, and increasingly sophisticated recital performances.
The Forest also invites students to discover how music connects with the broader arts. Through composition, arranging, musical theater, poetry, literature, movement, collaboration, and public performance, students learn to communicate ideas and emotions in meaningful ways while developing as well-rounded musicians and artists. By the end of the Forest, students have gained not only greater technical ability, but also the confidence, creativity, and versatility needed to continue ascending toward the highest levels of comprehensive musicianship.
🏔 Ridge
Levels 22–28
The view begins to expand. Students at Ridge continue developing confidence, independence, and thoughtful musicianship through experiences that encourage both artistic growth and personal responsibility. Musicians begin seeing music from a broader perspective.
The Ridge represents a significant step toward artistic maturity and professional musicianship. Across seven challenging levels, students deepen their study of major composers, musical styles, and performance traditions while continuing to strengthen piano, singing, a second instrument, advanced musicianship, and creative artistry. Repertoire expands across classical, jazz, gospel, popular, and American musical traditions, encouraging students to develop both technical excellence and stylistic versatility.
Throughout the Ridge, students move beyond individual performance to become confident collaborators, accompanists, ensemble musicians, arrangers, composers, and musical leaders. They participate in choirs, community performances, and other authentic musical experiences while creating original arrangements and compositions of increasing sophistication. By the end of the Ridge, students are not simply performing music at a high level, they are developing the breadth, leadership, and artistic judgment of well-rounded musicians who are prepared to make meaningful contributions wherever music is made.
🌄 Highlands
Levels 29–35
The climb continues with growing purpose. Students continue refining their musicianship while developing greater artistic maturity, broader understanding, and increasing confidence in applying what they have learned across many musical situations. Each accomplishment prepares students for even greater possibilities.
The Highlands invite students to think, create, and communicate as composers and mature musicians. Across seven advanced levels, students immerse themselves in the music of master composers while exploring diverse musical styles, historical periods, and traditions. Technical mastery continues to grow alongside deeper study of harmony, modality, musical structure, and artistic interpretation, with recital programs that demonstrate both breadth of knowledge and depth of musical understanding.
Throughout the Highlands, creativity becomes an essential part of musicianship. Students compose original works, create their own harmonic progressions, explore all seven musical modes, write for soloists and ensembles, and develop an increasingly personal musical voice. By combining performance, composition, analysis, and historical understanding, the Highlands prepare students not only to perform great music, but also to contribute meaningfully to the continuing tradition of music itself.
❄️ Alpine
Levels 36–42
The air becomes clearer, and the expectations become higher. Students are challenged to demonstrate increasingly sophisticated musicianship, thoughtful artistry, and confident musical communication while continuing to grow with humility and curiosity. Even experienced musicians remain lifelong learners.
The Alpine challenges students to become exceptionally versatile musicians who can thrive across a wide variety of musical styles, settings, and professional roles. Throughout seven advanced levels, students explore an extraordinary range of repertoire — from classical masterworks and American concert music to jazz, blues, rock, musical theater, sacred music, and popular traditions — while continuing to develop piano, singing, multiple instruments, advanced musicianship, conducting, composition, arranging, and performance at the highest levels.
The Alpine emphasizes authentic musical leadership through real-world experiences. Students perform in bands, choirs, orchestras, theater productions, worship services, community ensembles, and public performances while composing, arranging, rehearsing, conducting, accompanying, and collaborating with other musicians. By the end of the Alpine, students have developed the adaptability, artistry, and professional experience to contribute confidently and creatively in virtually any musical setting, demonstrating that true musicianship is measured not only by excellence, but also by versatility, leadership, and service through music.
⭐ Crest
Levels 43–49
The summit draws near. Students approaching the Crest have developed broad musicianship through years of thoughtful learning and meaningful musical experiences. These levels celebrate refinement, leadership, artistic excellence, and continued personal growth. The journey itself has become part of who they are.
The Crest represents the highest level of sustained musical leadership, creativity, and service before the final Summit. Across seven distinguished levels, students undertake ambitious artistic projects while presenting substantial public performances that demonstrate mastery as performers, composers, arrangers, conductors, collaborators, and educators. Repertoire spans many of history's greatest composers and musical traditions, while students continue developing excellence across multiple instruments, singing, and comprehensive musicianship.
Throughout the Crest, students move beyond personal achievement to make meaningful contributions to their musical communities. They compose for soloists and ensembles, conduct rehearsals and performances, organize public events, mentor younger musicians, present educational workshops, and lead artistic projects that bring people together through music. By the end of the Crest, students have become accomplished musicians whose influence extends beyond their own performances, using their knowledge, creativity, leadership, and generosity to strengthen the musical lives of others and to help shape the future of music.
🏆 Summit
Level 50
The Summit represents the highest level of achievement within The Dennis Frayne Ascent. Reaching the Summit is not the end of becoming a musician. Rather, it celebrates the successful completion of the Ascent itself while recognizing years of dedication, perseverance, comprehensive musicianship, and joyful participation in music. Like every true summit, it offers both a remarkable accomplishment and a new beginning.
The Summit is the culmination of The Dennis Frayne Ascent: a celebration of a lifetime devoted to comprehensive musicianship, artistic excellence, leadership, and service. At this final level, students bring together everything they have learned as performers, singers, instrumentalists, composers, arrangers, conductors, educators, collaborators, and creative artists. The Summit represents not simply the completion of a program, but the beginning of a lifetime of meaningful contribution through music.
The Summit challenges students to imagine, create, and lead on the largest scale. Through major original compositions, conducting, film scoring, audio production, public performances, and the planning and direction of large musical events, students demonstrate the ability to transform musical ideas into experiences that inspire performers, audiences, and communities alike. By completing the Summit, students have shown not only exceptional musicianship, but also the vision, creativity, humility, and leadership to preserve musical traditions, inspire future generations, and strengthen the world through a lifetime of music.
One Connected Journey
Although each tier has its own character and purpose, together they form one connected pathway of lifelong musical growth. The Dennis Frayne Ascent was designed to encourage students, not by asking them to compete with one another, but by inviting each individual to continue becoming more musical through steady progress, meaningful accomplishment, and authentic learning.
No two musical journeys are exactly alike, yet every student follows the same upward path, building one achievement upon another while discovering the lifelong joy of making music.
