Crest Level 1 (Ascent Level 43)
Dedicated to Franz Schubert
Repertoire: All Schubert, including 50% Schubert lieder or art song with collaborative piano accompaniment (either as pianist or singer), plus any other Schubert selections, any instrument.
Instruments: Piano, voice, and 2nd and 3rd instruments (required).
Technical Skill: Play 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on the piano, 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 2nd instrument, and 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 3rd instrument.
Musicianship: Sing the scalar vocalises, on moveable-Do solfege, and again on scale degree numbers.
Project: Compose an art song, set lyrics with piano accompaniment, rehearse and perform in your recital.
Performance: Recital, 60-70 minutes, including minimum 10 minutes singing in primary and two secondary languages. 2nd and 3rd instruments required. Must be public recital with a live audience, recorded. Please provide program and hospitality.
Crest Level 2 (Ascent Level 44)
Dedicated to Clara Schumann
Repertoire: All Clara Schumann, including: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7, plus any other Clara Schumann selections, any instrument.
Instruments: Piano, voice, and 2nd and 3rd instruments (required).
Technical Skill: Play 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on the piano, 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 2nd instrument, and 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 3rd instrument.
Musicianship: Sing the scalar vocalises, on moveable-Do solfege, and again on scale degree numbers.
Project: Compose a choral piece, a cappella or with supporting instrumentation, rehearse and perform in your recital.
Performance: Recital, 60-70 minutes, including minimum 10 minutes singing in primary and two secondary languages. 2nd and 3rd instruments required. Must be public recital with a live audience, recorded. Please provide program and hospitality.
Crest Level 3 (Ascent Level 45)
Dedicated to Duke Ellington
Repertoire: Ellington’s Soda Fountain Rag, one additional selection of Ellington’s music for piano solo, one or more selections of Ellington’s big band music, and any other Ellington selections, any instrument.
Instruments: Piano, voice, and 2nd and 3rd instruments (required).
Technical Skill: Play 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on the piano, 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 2nd instrument, and 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 3rd instrument.
Musicianship: Sing the scalar vocalises, on moveable-Do solfege, and again on scale degree numbers.
Project: Compose a big band style jazz arrangement, rehearse and perform in your recital.
Performance: Recital, 70-90 minutes, including minimum 10 minutes singing in primary and two secondary languages. 2nd and 3rd instruments required. Include some solo performance and some big band performance. Must be public recital with a live audience, recorded. Please provide program and hospitality. Intermission optional.
Crest Level 4 (Ascent Level 46)
Dedicated to Florence Price
Repertoire: All Price, including Piano Sonata in E minor, Three Little Negro Dances (Hoop Dance, Ticklin' Toes, & Cake Walk), and Fantasie Négre. Conduct Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight and Song of Hope. Any other Price selections, any instrument.
Instruments: Piano, voice, and 2nd and 3rd instruments (required).
Technical Skill: Play 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on the piano, 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 2nd instrument, and 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 3rd instrument.
Musicianship: Sing the scalar vocalises, on moveable-Do solfege, and again on scale degree numbers.
Project: Compose an orchestral piece, rehearse and perform at your recital.
Performance: Recital, 90-100 minutes, including minimum 10 minutes singing in primary and two secondary languages. 2nd and 3rd instruments required. Must be public recital with a live audience, recorded. Please provide program and hospitality. Intermission required.
Crest Level 5 (Ascent Level 47)
Dedicated to Maurice Ravel
Repertoire: All Ravel, including: Gaspard de la nuit or Miroirs; Jeux d'eau; Pavane pour une infante défunte; Boléro (perform with orchestra, any instrument or conductor);any other Ravel selections, any instrument.
Instruments: Piano, voice, and 2nd and 3rd instruments (required).
Technical Skill: Play 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on the piano, 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 2nd instrument, and 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 3rd instrument.
Musicianship: Sing the scalar vocalises, on moveable-Do solfege, and again on scale degree numbers. Stomp the beat and tap the rhythm while singing the moveable-Do solfege of Boléro (three iterations).
Project: Compose a piece of music using both mixed and/or compound meters, any instrumentation, and perform at your recital.
Performance: 1) Recital, 90-100 minutes, including minimum 10 minutes singing in primary and two secondary languages. 2nd and 3rd instruments required. Must be public recital with a live audience, recorded. Please provide program and hospitality. Intermission required. 2) Participation in rehearsals and a public performance of Boléro, any instrument or conductor. Can be part of your recital or a separate organization and event.
Crest Level 6 (Ascent Level 48)
Dedicated to Charles Ives & Aaron Copland
Repertoire & Instruments: All Ives and Copland, including: one or more Ive’s solo piano works; one or more Copland’s solo piano works;any other Ives and/or Copland selections, any instrument, voice, or conducting, including orchestra.
Instruments: Piano, voice, and 2nd and 3rd instruments (required).
Technical Skill: Play 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on the piano, 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 2nd instrument, and 10 minutes of technical skill exercises on 3rd instrument.
Musicianship: Sing the scalar vocalises, on moveable-Do solfege, and again on scale degree numbers.
Project: Compose a theme and variations on an American folk song, for any ensemble, rehearse and perform at your recital.
Performance: Recital, 90-100 minutes, including minimum 10 minutes singing in primary and two secondary languages. 2nd and 3rd instruments required. Must be public recital with a live audience, recorded. Please provide program and hospitality. Intermission required.
Crest Level 7 (Ascent Level 49)
Dedicated to Nadia Boulanger
Repertoire: All music selections by Boulanger or any student of Boulanger, any instrument.
Instruments: Piano, voice, and 2nd and 3rd instruments (required).
Technical Skill: Play 15 minutes of technical skill exercises on the piano, 15 minutes of technical skill exercises on 2nd instrument, and 15 minutes of technical skill exercises on 3rd instrument.
Musicianship: Sing the scalar vocalises, on moveable-Do solfege, and again on scale degree numbers.
Project: 1) Compose a solo piano work. 2) Compose a choral work. 3) Compose an orchestral work (character piece, symphony, opera, musical theater, etc.). Rehease and perform each work separately or at your recital.
Performance: 1) Recital, 90-100 minutes, including minimum 10 minutes singing in primary and two secondary languages. 2nd and 3rd instruments required. Must be public recital with a live audience, recorded. Please provide program and hospitality. Intermission required. 2) Conduct a community orchestra at an outdoor event, as a guest conductor. 3) Host a student recital at a retirement community. The student performers must be your direct students. 4) Deliver a 60-minute presentation or workshop on a music or music education topic at a music education seminar, conference, school professional development event, or as a guest lecturer at a college, university, conservatory, or other educational institution or venue.
